It’s official. Greek Week 2008 has begun.

Sunday, Sept. 28, kicked off the exciting week, as the Greek organizations on Auburn’s campus enjoy food, entertainment and good-natured competition, in an effort to give back to the community.

“Greek Week is a spirit organization for all Greeks. We are trying to show a united front for Greek pride. We do a lot here on campus and are just trying to show the campus how involved we really are,” said Leah Gordon, the Director of Greek Week 2008.

This week, all of the Greek organizations are put into teams, competing to earn the most Greek Week points. Each day, participants enjoy fun activities and great food, while helping a good cause.

On Monday, Greeks are encouraged to wear their jerseys and sign in for points on the concourse. There will be a lunch honoring the service people of Auburn, thanking them for all that they do for our community. They will also be taking donations for “construction” to help with the Beat Bama food drive.

On Tuesday, teams are encouraged to wear their team color to class, and again, sign in for points on the concourse. Later that night, there will be a Panhellenic new member
Bar-b-que followed by the Miss Greek Week pageant. All 16 sororities have one member representing their chapter at this beauty pageant.

On Wednesday, students will earn extra points for their team for wearing a toga to class. That night, there will be a toga-themed chapter meeting for all sorority and fraternity members. Members will have the opportunity to meet other Greeks and hang out as they all watch a movie together.

Thursday is the final day of the competition and team members wearing their new Greek week t-shirts will receive points for signing in on the concourse. When students sign in, they will also be able to enjoy a cookout and entertainment on the concourse. That night, a representative from each team will participate in “Greek Idol.” It is Auburn University’s version of American Idol, with talented and entertaining acts.

In addition to the activities on campus, when team members eat at a specified restaurant in the area and sign the back of their receipt, the restaurant donates a percentage of the purchase back to the Greek Week organization.

Finally, on Thursday night, after the Greek Idol competition, the winner of Greek Week is announced. Teams get ranked based on their involvement in the competitions, total points earned for the week as well as the amount of money earned from restaurant donations.

While these activities are meant to be fun, the purpose of this week is give back to the community. “This year our proceeds are going to the Auburn Police Department and we’re going to buy them defibrillators to put into their cars, so that way it benefits everybody,” Gordon said. Each year, Greek Week raises a lot of money for the community and hopefully this year will be even better than the last.

Although Greek organizations have put together this event, it is important for non-Greeks get involved as well. Non-Greeks can participate in any of the events, buy t-shirts and make donations. The purpose of this event is to help others and any contributions from the Auburn community are greatly appreciated.
