Have you been wondering why there has been a lot of publicity this month for breast cancer awareness? Or have you been seeing more people wearing pink ribbons on their back packs, purses or lapels? Well, October is breast cancer awareness month. There have been many different organizations all around town, on Auburn University's campus and off campus, that support breast cancer awareness and research. Once local business, Mellow Mushroom, is trying to do it's part in helping find the cure for breast cancer.
This past Friday, Mellow Mushroom, wanted to try and raise awareness for breast cancer among its employees and customers. Mellow Mushroom did this by having all of its employees wear a specially made pink Mellow Mushroom t-shirt to work Friday. They also gave the t-shirts to a few others and asked if they would wear the shirts Friday as well. They wanted to draw quite a bit of attention to the shirts on the first day of selling to display that anybody could buy a t-shirt and help support breast cancer awareness and research. Mellow Mushroom was hoping that if people or customers saw employees and other people around town wearing the t-shirts that those people would want to find out how they could get a t-shirt like that too.
Mellow Mushroom had the idea for a t-shirt because they had not seen many of them around and thought it was a good way to advertise the breast cancer research and awareness campaign. The breast cancer awareness t-shirts are also a good way for Mellow Mushroom to be associated with the community and to get the community involved with them. One manager told me she believed that many college students would buy the t-shirts since they have been exposed to quite a bit of information about breast cancer and the research for it from various campus organizations. Mellow Mushroom plans on selling the t-shirts through the rest of the month, but may continue to sell them after October is over, depending on how well they sell or how high the demand is for the t-shirts.
Mellow Mushroom is selling the t-shirts for $20, which is just a little bit more than their regular Mellow Mushroom t-shirts they sell daily. Mellow Mushroom will donate half of the proceeds form each shirt to a research foundation for breast cancer research. The Mellow Mushroom team is excited to be participating in National Breast Cancer Awareness month and hope that they will sell quite a few t-shirts so Mellow Mushroom can give a significant amount of money toward breast cancer research and awareness.
The crew at Mellow Mushroom hopes they can inspire people to do their own research on breast cancer and its symptoms. They said that early detection is key when diagnosing, fighting and helping to prevent breast cancer. Mellow Mushroom is not just targeting women with their t-shirts, but they want men to realize that they too have a chance of acquiring breast cancer.
