" The beers that we are making are not the beers people in Alabama are accustomed to seeing on their shelves,” Jason Wilson, who is one of the founders of Back Forty Beer Company, said.

Jason Wilson is one of Alabama’s young entrepreneurs and a graduate of Auburn University. He is 29 years old and is one of the founders of the Back Forty Beer Company. He was born and raised in Gadsden, Ala., and received a bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management from Auburn University. He has been working for a large consumer products company since graduation as a Logistics Specialist, but is currently transitioning out of that role and into the full time responsibilities of the Brewery.

“I always new I wanted to own my own business, it was just a matter of finding something that I loved to do and the right opportunity to make it a reality”, Wilson said.

Wilson felt that there were three main experiences in his life that led up to his love of brewing craft beer. He said his first interest started in 2001, when he visited Crested Butte brewery in Colorado. He became fascinated by the culture of craft beer. He then spent time in the Abita brewing co. in Baton Rouge, La and last at The Sweetwater Brewery, Atlanta Brewing Co. and Twains Pub of Atlanta, Ga.

“All of these places are making world class beers and that was probably the last straw in my decision to start my own craft brewery,” said Wilson.

They came up with the name Back Forty because it is an agricultural term referring to the back 40 acres of land that is rarely maintained but usually very fertile for planting. Alabama’s outdated regulations on brewing beer make companies hesitant to enter the market .Therefore; they thought it would ironic to say that Alabama is the “back forty” of the beer industry in America.

“We decided to start Back Forty Beer Company and take on the challenge of operating in a less than favorable market so that we could bring great craft beer to Alabama,” Wilson explained.

They have been brewing for about four months and have just signed distribution deals that complete our coverage of the State of Alabama. Their beverage “naked pig pale ale” has recently found its way in Auburn. They believe their taste structure is wildly different from the current light beers on the market. Back Forty Beer Company believes that beers have attitudes and wanted to provide many different styles of beer. These styles will be on the market in the next six months. These beers include Naked Pig pale ale, Truck Stop honey brown ale, and peach wheat ale. These beers reflect Alabama heritage and are unique because they use honey from south Alabama and peaches from Chilton County, Ala., for their recipes.

“So while we are excited about how things have gone so far, we're really excited about the future”, Wilson said.” We're here for the long haul.”
