Umm don't look now but there's an undefeated team on the Auburn campus and no it's not the swimming and diving team. The Auburn Women's basketball team is quietly 10-0 and truly flying under the radar - on campus that is. With all the hype surrounding the "resignation" - firing or whatever it is of Tommy Tuberville, and the disappointment of the football season that wasn't (Glad that debacle is over), the women have jumped out to a great start on their season and are ranked 11 behind perennial SEC power Tennessee. (Who by the way has lost a game already).
On a side note the men are 4-4, just in case anyone was wondering. (Doubt it seriously though) Back to the women though, they could quite possibly be the lone bright spot on The Plains this year (08-09 season that is). Well I take that back aside from the always stellar swimming and diving teams, the women could actually make a run in the NCAA tournament if they can hold strong through a brutal SEC Conference schedule. A schedule that could possibly include five ranked teams by the time they play them. (Tennessee and Vandy are already ranked and Florida, Georgia, Miss St. all received votes in this weeks poll.)
While I don't think the women have a chance to go undefeated (Not a knock on them, the SEC is just always tough), they do have a chance to have an excellent season which could provide some solace for the lackluster fall we had on the plains. Now I know what you're saying... there's no way basketball, let alone womens basketball, can make up for a disappointing football season, but it does provide us with an opportunity to rally around a winning squad. Not only that, it'd be nice for an Auburn basketball team to do well for change.
SO here's to the Auburn Women's Basketball team whose band-wagon I'm officially jumping on. See you at the games.
