Okay, I know that ending world hunger couldn’t possibly be that simple, but my mom told me about this website, http://www.freerice.com, that is quickly making a dent it. How can that be possible? The site’s mainpage has an English vocabulary game on it, and for each vocabulary word that’s answered correctly, they pledge to donate 10 grains of rice that their website says “is distributed by United Nations World Food Program (WFP)“ to starving men, women and children. I’m no non-profit expert, but that’s a pretty big name drop. In the short one month and four days since they’ve been online http://www.freerice.com has donated 1,330,639,890 grains of rice to be distributed by the WFP. I know you’re thinking that’s a lot of zeroes, but according to TheRiceOrganization.org.uk, “There are over 29,000 grains of rice in one pound of long-grain rice.“ That means this website has donated roughly 45,884 lbs of rice to the WFP, as of November 11. Whoa. This is all paid for by the advertisers who advertise, unobstrusively, at the bottom of the game. If everything checks out, this is bar far the most practical, worthwile website I’ve ever heard of. Although they’d surely get more hits if their game was one of those strip-the-scantily-clad-hot-chicks/dudes games, like those found in bars, the websites creators have thoughtfully crafted their moderately entertaining, highly addictive, brain-challenging game to appeal to a more educated and presumably more affluent crowd of web-surfers. (For those non-business minded among us, this allows them to appeal to advertisers who offer high-end goods or services, socially-concerned advertisers, and public-image concerned advertisers, all of whom tend to have smart, big-budgeted advertising departments.) And even though I think the nudey game would probably be more fun, I’m still making http://www.freerice.com my new homepage, and I encourage you to do the same.
