Unlike Fergie, meat loaf never claims to be glamorous and is always a crowd pleaser. Though foodies have made it the butt of many jokes over the years, meat loaf has sustained its popularity for three simple reasons: it’s cheap, it’s easy to make and, when made with skill, it tastes great. My meat loaf recipe yields a moist, tender, flavorful loaf that’s in no way related to the dry, rubbery, gristly meat loafs of the public school cafeteria lunches of our childhood. And since I know meat loaf will never win any food beauty pageants, I do offer up some ideas for quirky, playful presentations....(More)

I try not to buy into advertisting campaingns, but I am a consumer sucker when it comes to seasonal brews. And sadly for my liver, this year there are more holiday and winter themed beers on the shelves this year that ever before. Here's an uncomprehensive list of beers that can help you get into a festive mood:...(More)

Watching "Heroes" last night I caught a glimpse of 2 of ABC's new reality series, and I could not believe my eyes. In light of the writer's strike, a beloved favorite show of my childhood (I confess I sometimes watch reruns on ESPN Classic) "American Gladiators" has been revamped with shinier commercials and beefcakes who are more even 'roided out than the originals....(More)

Okay, I know that ending world hunger couldn't possibly be that simple, but my mom told me about this website, http://www.freerice.com, that is quickly making a dent it. How can that be possible? The site's mainpage has an English vocabulary game on it, and for each vocabulary word that's answered correctly, they pledge to donate 10 grains of rice that their website says "is distributed by United Nations World Food Program (WFP)" to starving men, women and children....(More)

Whoever came up with that “easy as pie” cliché sure hadn’t ever made a pie from scratch. There’s a reason 1950’s housewives and retired grandmothers are associated with pies—they have the cooking skills and 2+ hours required to make them. Nevertheless, pies remain unrivaled among comfort foods and are a fall favorite. For those of us who want to enjoy the pie taste without the fuss, here is a great alternative. My version of crock-pot apple cobbler assembles in minutes, tastes deceivingly like the real thing and leaves a lingering, inviting aroma that will permeate your entire apartment or house....(More)

Last weekend my friend Karen introduced me to what I believe to be the perfect chilled side dish—her super-easy, guilt-free four bean salad. Finally, a salad that doesn’t taste like rabbit food, involve lettuce, or turn brown in three days. It’s cheap, it’s fast, and it turns lunch time sandwiches and soups into a well-rounded meal. And if that weren’t enough, this hearty salad tastes better the longer it sits in the fridge, but I don’t foresee it sitting around for long. ...(More)
