No, that's not a mirage you're seeing, beer really is a penny between 7-9 ($5 cover) at The Tavern, Auburn's newest bar located in the former Botcher's/Lumberyard building on Opelika Road. I'd heard rumors for a few weeks and believed it sounded too good to be true. So, I did a little libation investigation at The Tavern last Wednesday night concluded that you can drink there cheaper than you can at home Wednesday night. And, it turns out that's not the only ridiculous deal they've got. Look for a full-length article with all the details next week....(More)

Everyone nods off during church at one time or another, like after you've gone out a little to hard on Saturday (Or Friday if you go to Temple) or when the preacher is exceptionally boring, but sometimes it's necessary to suck it up and stay awake. Especially if you're sitting behind the alter at a culturally significant, televised service, and you're the former President of the United States! Watch Bill fade in and out of consciousness during the Dr. Martin Luther King tribute service last Sunday at Harlem's Convent Avenue Baptist Church. ...(More)

So the Sundance Film Festival kicked off last night in Park City, Utah. I'll keep you posted on the winners in the coming weeks, but in the meantime the festival is premiering a new short film each day, starting today, on their website. I just bit off 15 minutes of useless in-between-class time with "I Love Sarah Jane", today's love-story/zombie short by director Spencer Susser. (I would embed it, but it's got a ton of wordy-dirties in it.) It wasn't necessarily my favorite 15 minutes of film, but it was certainly prettier and more interesting to watch than random crap on YouTube or College Humor. I'm really looking forward to Wednesday's selection, "Because Washington is Hollywood for Ugly People." Check the shorts out on http://www.sundance.org/festival....(More)

Believe it or not, "fast food" doesn't have to be fried or involve mystery meat. My flavor-packin' pesto assembles in the time it takes to boil pasta, but it tastes like two Italian grandmothers have slaved over it all day. It might take you a few minutes to find the pine nuts in the grocery store, but the nutty depth of flavor they bring to the sauce makes the hunt worthwhile. ...(More)

If you’re reading this in print, you know firsthand how eerie it feels to be in Auburn when school is out and most of the students are gone. There are no lines at Kroger, there’s no wait for Jimmy John’s delivery and you can find at parking spot downtown at noon and at midnight. It’s almost like you are Tom Hanks in “Castaway” or something. We stragglers have to band together. Since it’s finally cold, have your last-men-standing over a hot, home cooked meal. Good friends and my homey chicken parmesan will make you forget just how dead Auburn is right now. If you’re reading this article on thecornernews.com, make this dish for your hometown crew and catch up on all the gossip over dinner. Where ever you are, enjoy and Happy Holidays!...(More)

Since we couldn't skip finals, pick fruit off they money tree and fly to London Monday to see Led Zeppelin's purported one-and-only reunion show, we'll have to settle for crappy phone videos of the show. The quality of the videos is hit or miss, but it's well worth your time to sift through the pile. Here's a decent quality recording of "Kashmir" for your listening and viewing pleasure....(More)

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=3994185 In my experience, I've found that (almost) all men hate trying on clothes before they buy them. And according to this ABC news story, even the men who hail from fashion's international capital city, Paris, France, hate to try on clothing. But, a clever boutique has come up with a unique solution: surrogate "shoppenboys". ...(More)

Last year "PC World" wrote an article on the "15 Best Places to Waste Time on the Web." Most of their picks like YouTube and IMDB weren't new to savvy, semi-professional procrastinators such as myself, but there was a gem in the group: Fark.com. It's as gut-bustingly funny as fictional newspaper "The Onion," but it's all real news....(More)
